Neon Depths

First-person shooter

A fast first-person shooter through a neon-lit industrial facility.

Neon Depths is a fast, modern take on the classic corridor shooter. You drop into a sprawling sci-fi facility that has been overrun by its own machines, and fight your way down through three episodes: the Foundry, the Cryo Labs and the Core. Every facility is assembled from hand-built room modules into a new layout, with coloured keycards, locked blast doors, switch-operated gates, lifts, hidden closets and an exit lift at the end.

Movement is quick and slippery in the best way: strafe-jump to build speed, slide under fire and jump out of the slide to keep your momentum. There is no reloading. Six weapons cover every range, from the Volt pistol and the Breacher shotgun to a piercing rail lance and the Sunburst, a plasma ultimate you charge by dealing damage. Six kinds of robot hunt you, each with a readable attack, and each episode ends with a boss.

How to play

  • Click the game to capture the mouse, then look around with the mouse and move with WASD. Fire with the left mouse button. On phones, use the left stick to move, the right stick to aim and the FIRE button to shoot.
  • Each facility has one or more coloured keycards. Doors that glow red, cyan or amber only open once you carry the matching card. Orange-lit gates are opened by a switch somewhere nearby: press Use (E) next to it, or simply shoot it.
  • Reach the green exit lift to finish the level. The tally then shows how many hostiles you destroyed, how many secrets and items you found, and your time against par.
  • Health, armour, ammo and plasma cores lie around every level. Armour absorbs half of the damage you take. The Sunburst charges as you deal damage; press Q when the meter is full to unleash it.
  • Press Tab to open the automap. It fills in as you explore and marks doors in their lock colours.

Tips & strategy

  • Never stand still. Strafing sideways while you shoot makes most enemy bolts miss, and keeps rushers from landing their lunge.
  • Slide, then jump while the slide is still going: you keep the slide's speed in the air. Chaining jumps just as you land while strafing builds even more speed.
  • Every enemy telegraphs its attack. Troopers' arm cannons glow before a burst, Lancers paint you with a red laser that locks a moment before the shot, and Bulwarks open their shoulder pods before a rocket salvo.
  • Bulwarks carry a front shield that halves your damage. Circle them, or use the Hammer launcher's splash.
  • Hives keep birthing Skitters until you destroy the hive itself. Push through to it instead of fighting the brood.
  • Picking up a keycard trips the alarms and teleports in an ambush squad. Pick it up with full health and a good weapon in hand.
  • Walls that look slightly different, with a hairline of light at their base, often hide a secret closet. Press Use on them or shoot them.
  • Rocket blasts push you too. A Hammer shot at your feet while you jump launches you higher, at the cost of a little health.

A short history of the genre

First-person shooters took shape in the early 1990s, when a handful of PC games proved that a fast, textured 3D maze full of enemies could run on a home computer. Their formula of keycards, secret walls, end-of-level tallies and an arsenal that grows as you go became one of the most copied designs in games.

After two decades of slower, cover-based military shooters, the 2010s brought a revival of that older style: fast movement, no reloading, big readable enemies and levels built for exploration. Neon Depths belongs to that revival, pairing the classic structure with modern lighting, physics-driven feedback and procedural level assembly, all running directly in your browser.

FAQ

Is Neon Depths free?

Yes. Neon Depths is free to play in your browser with no download or sign-up. The site is supported by ads that never cover the game.

Does it work on phones and with a controller?

Yes. On touch screens you get two virtual sticks plus fire, jump, slide and use buttons, with aim assist. Gamepads are supported with aim assist too. A landscape phone works best.

Are the levels random?

Each campaign level is assembled from hand-built room modules by a seeded generator, so every level is the same each time you play it and your progress and best scores stay meaningful. The Daily Breach builds a new facility every day, the same for everyone.

What is the Daily Breach?

A single facility generated from the day's seed with two modifiers, such as Low Gravity or Glass Cannon. Everyone plays the same layout on the same day, and your best score is saved.

How do I unlock more levels?

Clearing a level unlocks the next one in that episode. Clearing the first two levels of an episode opens the next episode. Progress is saved in your browser.

The mouse stopped working after I paused. What do I do?

Click the game view once to capture the mouse again. Pressing Esc releases the mouse and pauses the game.

Can I take screenshots?

Yes. Press F2 (or use the pause menu) for photo mode: fly a free camera, add depth of field and filters, and save a high-resolution image.
