Hop Quest

3D collect-a-thon platformer

A bright 3D collect-a-thon platformer with six worlds to explore.

Hop Quest is a 3D collect-a-thon platformer in the spirit of the great console mascot games. You start in Hopscotch Haven, a sunny plaza on a lake, where six portals lead to six compact, hand-built worlds: grassy Clover Hills, the turquoise Sunny Shoals, icy Frosty Peaks, the brass conveyor belts of Gearworks, the glowing lava of Ember Caldera and the low-gravity clouds of Starlight Skies.

Every world hides three big stars: one at the end of its main course, one that appears when you gather five star shards, and one tucked away in a secret. Stars open new portals and teach new moves, so the further you go the more of each world you can reach. Along the way there are coins to sweep up, crates to smash, cracked floors to pound through and plenty of hidden corners.

How to play

  • Run with WASD, the left stick or the on-screen stick. Press Jump to hop and press it again in the air for a double jump. Hold Jump for a higher leap, tap it for a short one.
  • Walk into a glowing portal in the hub to enter a world. Locked portals show how many stars they need. Grab the goal star at the end of a world's course to clear it and return to the hub.
  • Your moves grow with your star count: the dash unlocks at 2 stars and the wall jump at 4. In the air, ground-pound to smash cracked tiles and crates and to bounce extra high off springs and mushrooms.
  • Touching a hazard or falling costs a heart and puts you back on the last safe ground. Lose all three hearts and you restart from the last checkpoint flag with full health. Nothing is ever lost.

Tips & strategy

  • Coyote time and jump buffering are generous: you can still jump a split second after running off a ledge, and a jump pressed just before landing comes out the moment you touch down.
  • Your double jump goes furthest if you press it at the top of your first jump. For the longest leap of all, double jump and then dash while you are falling.
  • Ground-pounding onto a spring or mushroom launches you about a third higher than simply landing on it.
  • Ice keeps your momentum: start turning early, and use short taps of the stick to steer.
  • Collect coins in quick succession to climb the chime ladder; every eighth coin in a chain rings a full chord.
  • Cracked floors, odd ledges and doorways you can't quite reach usually mean a secret. Look over the edges of platforms too.
  • Lost? Hold F (or LB) to swing the camera behind you, or drag to look around. The camera never moves while you are steering it yourself.
  • In the Grand Tour and the Daily Star Dash every move is unlocked from the start, so plan routes with dashes and wall jumps.

A short history of the genre

Three-dimensional platformers arrived in the mid-1990s, when home consoles gained the power to render whole worlds you could run around in. The breakthrough designs swapped the left-to-right level for an open playground filled with things to collect: stars, puzzle pieces, notes and tokens, each guarding a little challenge. Players called them collect-a-thons.

The genre's toolbox has stayed remarkably consistent: a double jump, a ground pound, a wall kick, a camera you can steer, and bright themed worlds such as grassy hills, beaches, snowfields, lava and clouds, all joined by a central hub. Modern takes add forgiving touches like coyote time, jump buffering and checkpoints. Hop Quest gathers those conventions into compact worlds you can play in a few minutes each, right in the browser.

FAQ

Is Hop Quest free?

Yes. Hop Quest is free to play in your browser with no download or sign-up. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads that never cover the game.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Stars, secrets, unlocked moves and your best coin counts are saved in your browser on this device. You can export your profile from the Profile page and import it elsewhere.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. A floating stick under your left thumb moves the hero, Jump, Dash and Pound buttons sit on the right and you drag anywhere on the right half to look around. Landscape works best.

Can I use a controller?

Yes. Any standard gamepad works: left stick to run, right stick for the camera, A to jump, X to dash and B to ground-pound.

What is the Daily Star Dash?

Every day one world is remixed for everyone in the same way: it may be mirrored, floaty, faster or set at night. Five star shards are placed along its routes; collect them all to reveal the goal star and stop the clock. Your best time of the day is saved and can be shared.

What is the Grand Tour?

A speedrun through all six worlds back to back, from each world's start to its goal star, with every move unlocked. Your total time goes on your local leaderboard.

How many stars are there?

Twenty: three in each of the six worlds and two hidden in the hub. Collecting stars opens portals, unlocks the dash and wall jump, and earns new looks for your hero.

Can I take screenshots?

Yes. Press F2 or choose Photo mode from the pause menu to fly a free camera with depth of field, filters and a high-resolution capture.
