Road Hopper

Lane-crossing arcade

An endless lane-crossing hop through a tiny voxel world.

Road Hopper is an endless lane-crossing game set in a tiny handmade voxel world. Hop forward one row at a time across busy roads, rivers full of drifting logs and lily pads, and railway tracks where trains thunder through with barely a warning. Every row you reach is a point, and the world goes on for as long as you can keep hopping.

The countryside is built like a model railway diorama, photographed with a tilt-shift lens: chunky painted blocks, soft shadows and a day that slowly turns to night while you play, with street lamps, headlights and glowing windows taking over after dusk. Collect coins along the way to unlock eight hand-built characters, from a bunny and a duckling to a robot and a little dragon. Coins are only ever earned by playing.

How to play

  • Hop forward with the Up arrow, W or Space. Sidestep with Left and Right (or A and D) and step back with Down or S. On a touch screen, tap anywhere to hop forward and swipe to move sideways or back. On a gamepad, use the D-pad or left stick; A also hops forward.
  • Roads: cars, vans, trucks and buses drive in both directions at different speeds. Wait for a gap, then go. Your hopper is a little smaller than it looks, so near misses really are misses.
  • Rivers: the water is deadly. Ride logs, rafts of turtles and lily pads across. Logs and rafts carry you sideways, and drifting off the edge of the world ends your run. Some turtle rafts dive: they wobble first, so hop off in time.
  • Railways: crossing signals flash and a bell rings shortly before every train. Never linger on the tracks while the lights are flashing.
  • Keep moving forward. Dawdle for too long without reaching a new row and a hawk's shadow starts circling, and then it swoops.
  • Your score is the furthest row you reached. Coins you collect are banked at the end of each run; spend them on new characters by pressing C (or tapping the coin button) before your first hop.

Tips & strategy

  • Tap in rhythm. Hops are buffered, so two quick taps chain into two hops without losing either, which is perfect for slipping through a gap two lanes wide.
  • Watch a lane for a moment before you commit. Vehicles in a lane all move at the same speed, so the gap you see is the gap you get.
  • On rivers, stand near the middle of a log so the current has further to carry you before the edge. Hop sideways along a log to line yourself up with the next one.
  • Lily pads never move: they are the calm rows of a river crossing. Use them to wait for the next log to come round.
  • Turtle rafts that are about to dive wobble for almost a second first. If yours starts to shake, move on.
  • When the crossing lights flash, the train is already close. Either be across the tracks quickly or wait well back.
  • The hawk only cares about progress. Stepping sideways or back doesn't reset its clock, so don't wait too long on a safe patch of grass.
  • Coins on the road are worth the detour only when traffic is light. A blue gem counts as five coins.
  • Rush Hour mode starts with busier roads but doubles every coin you collect, so it is the fastest way to fill your wardrobe if you can survive it.

A short history of the genre

Lane-crossing games appeared in arcades in the early 1980s: guide a small creature across a road full of traffic and a river full of floating logs, one hop at a time. The idea was so readable that it needed no instructions at all, and it spread to almost every home computer and console of the era.

In the 2010s the genre was reinvented for phones as an endless game: instead of reaching a goal at the top of one screen, the world generates forever, the camera keeps moving, and you collect coins to unlock new characters. Road Hopper follows that modern endless style with its own world, characters and rules, including turtle rafts that dive, crossing signals with bells and a daily world that is the same for every player.

FAQ

Is Road Hopper free to play?

Yes. Road Hopper is free in your browser with no download or account, and every character is unlocked with coins you earn by playing. There is nothing to buy.

How do I play on my phone?

Tap anywhere to hop forward and swipe left, right or down to move in that direction. The game works in portrait and landscape.

How do I unlock characters?

Collect coins while you play; they are added to your coin bank at the end of each run. Before your first hop, press C or tap the coin button in the top-right corner to open the wardrobe and unlock or choose a character.

Why did a hawk grab me?

If you go too long without reaching a new row, a hawk's shadow starts circling and a warning appears. Keep moving forward and it will leave you alone.

Is there always a way across?

Yes. Every stretch of road, river and railway is checked when the world is generated to make sure it can be crossed in time from wherever you stand, so a run never ends because the game was unfair.

What is the Daily Trail?

A world generated from today's date, so every player hops through exactly the same roads, rivers and railways. It changes at midnight UTC, and you can share your best distance.

Where are my coins and characters saved?

In your browser's local storage on this device, together with your scores. Your profile page lets you export and import that data.

Updates
